Prof. Jolly in the introduction to his edition of the Arthaśāstra has sought to prove that the Arthaśāstra was composed in the third century after Christ and the Kāmasutra which was modelled upon it, in the fourth century A.C.⁴ Every one of the arguments of Jolly with regard to the date of the Arthaśāstra has been critically examined by Mr. K. P. Jayaswal in his recently published work on *Hindu Polity*⁵ and has been shown to be untenable, and the 4th century B.C. has been proved to be the only probable date for that work. His theory therefore with regard to the date of Vātsyāyana naturally falls to the ground.
