In describing the abuses in the king's harem Vātsyāyana says that among the Prācyas, a number of ladies—nine or ten in number—would combine and hide a common lover against discovery;³ besides, he refers to some general customs prevalent in Prācya countries (Prācyopacarah) with respect to the conduct of the king towards his many wives¹ and also to the temporary so-called marriage of the daughter of a courtesan by a Nāgaraka.²
