That Gauḍa meant Bengal in the sixth century also is proved to a certainty by the Haraha inscription of the reign of the Maukhari King Iśānavarman of 554 A. C. (Vikramasaṃvat 611) stating that this sovereign made "the Gauḍas living on the seashore, in future to remain within their proper realm."¹ The Gauḍas on the sea-coast could certainly not have lived near the hills in the Gonda district.
