Varāhamihira who lived about the same time as King Īśānavarman,—that is, the first half of the sixth century after Christ²—in his *Bṛhat Saṃhitā*, also places Gauḍa in the immediate neighbourhood of Pauṇḍra in the eastern region,³ and Vaṅga and Kaliṅga in the south-east He thus gives a correct position for Gauḍa and Vaṅga, and the Taneshar of Mr. Jackson is not Gauḍa but Guḍa, which again, is only the second half of the name of a country the full designation of which according to Varāhamihira⁵ was *Pāṇḍuguḍa*, as may be seen from the way in which Bhaṭṭotpala reads the passage in his celebrated commentary on the *Bṛhatsaṃhitā*;⁶ the error of dividing the single name into two is most probably not of Albiruni who was well acquainted with the commentary,¹ but of the Translator.
