COURTESANS IN SOUTH India had almost the same kind of life as the courtesans in northern India. They were expert dancers and singers They were proficient in several arts and attracted customers with all the charm at their command They were also employed by the kings for certain kinds of services and were engaged as temple dancers. This is indicated in Chapter X of the *Shilappadikaram*, dated between the second and the fifth century A.D The work contains a convincing account of the life of a courtesan who lived in the great city of Puhar.
