Taking these one by one we find contracts are of different kinds, oral or documentary and entered into for varied purposes.¹ This is not the place to examine the various clauses and the rules and restrictions relating to the law of contract though a very interesting subject. Suffice it to say that the agreement was to be clear and plain (सम्यक्विभाषितं), drawn up in public (अच्छन्नं), and before witnesses (साक्षितमत), noting down the place (देश), time (काल) and the community (वर्ग), perhaps of both the parties as well as the circumstances (रूप, लक्षण) under which it was effected.²
