Nakkīrar in the Tamil classic *Neduṇal-vāḍai*¹ one of the ten collections which go by the name of *Pattupāṭṭu*, describes in felicitous terms how Neḍum Seḷiyan II conducted himself towards the wounded soldiers in his camp. Late in the night, and in spite of inclement weather accompanied by rain and chill air the king used to leave his camp with an escort and make kind and sympathetic inquiries after each soldier suffering from a wound or pain. Usually a general would go in advance and point out to the king the heroic men wounded on the previous day's fight.
