Kāmandaka strikes the same note when he says तस्याभावे धर्मनाशः तदभावे जगच्च्युतिः। ii. 34. In commenting on this verse Sankarārya quotes तथाहि ‘लोकधारणात् धर्म’ इति निरुच्यते। It may be pointed out here that this *loka-dhāraṇam* consists in warding off evils arising from five different sources—officials, robbers, enemies, king's relatives, and king's covetousness.¹ This action on the part of the state represented by the king is for the increase of *trivarga* (त्रिवर्गपरिवृद्धये). Not only the gathering of the revenues in the proper season, but also the spending of the same in proper time is insisted upon, and in this way it is said that the realization of the three ends (त्रिवर्गप्रतिपत्ति) is attained.²
