¹³ Compare this with what prevailed in ancient and mediaeval times in the West. The castles of princes and nobles were the schools where the knight received his education from about the age of seven or eight. Instruction was provided as to how to guide a war horse, how to use the bow and the arrow, and how to manage a lance; all this by making him ride against a wooden figure. In this period he was called a squire till he was twenty. He was next ‘to win his spurs’, as it was called, and be admitted into the order of knighthood. (Eileen Power and G. C. Coulton).
