Megasthenes explains⁵⁴ how the elephants were hunted, and how their distempers were cured by simple remedies such as cow’s milk for eye-disease and pig’s fat for sores. He further speaks of a committee to supervise elephants and refers to royal stalls and to a war-elephant carrying four men, three archers, and a driver. It is interesting in this connexion to note what Plutarch writes of the clephant of Porus in his battle with Alexander.⁵⁵
