¹ As the root from which rājan is to be derived, Aug. Fick (Vergleichendes Wörterbuch 4th Edition. Part I, p. 117) indicates rez with the meaning "stretch." To this root are to be traced, among others, the Sanskrit rāj, to rule, Greek 'ορέγω to stretch, Lat. rego, to direct, Goth. uf-rak-jan, to stretch out, Mhd. recken.
