"Agriculture they carry on, goats and sheep they breed," so Vidhura in the Dasabrâhmaṇa Jātaka protests against the Brâhmaṇas, a protest which was wholly justified if we are to follow the Pali texts. The land-cultivating and cattle-rearing Brâhmaṇa is here such a permanently recurring figure¹ that it seems probable that in the Buddhist countries land was mostly in the possession of the Brâhmaṇas.
