Especially, it is the Brâhmaṇas in the King’s service whose greed is brought prominently into view. In the Susîma Jātaka it is narrated that the Brâhmaṇas after the death of the purohita, who, as explained, got ten millions every time for the consecration of the State elephant, went to the king and told him that they wanted, as the purohita’s son was still too young and knew neither the three Vedas nor the hatthisutta, to perform the elephant consecration themselves. The king agreed and the Brâhmaṇas were highly pleased to receive the money for the hatthimangala.
