¹ Even in the edicts of Aśoka this juxtaposition of samaṇa and brāhmaṇa is found. In the fourth edict, among the duties laid down by Aśoka to be performed, proper conduct towards Brâhmaṇas and ascetics is mentioned (*bambhanasamaṇānam saṃpaṭipati*). Cf. Zeitsch d. Deutsch.
