² The office of a seṭṭhi seems to be permanently occupied by a gahapati. Nowhere is it mentioned that a member of another caste or class, such as, a rich Brâhmaṇa has held this position. If not in the brief form seṭṭhi, of the seṭṭhi gahapati mention is made, in Vinaya Piṭaka, Mahavagga I. 7. 7; VIII. 1. 9, 13; Cullavagga VI. 4.1 sq.
