On account of the great wealth at his disposal, his influence manifestly extends outside the sphere of work of his own business; it is true we do not find it expressly stated that he lends money at interest; we may, however, very well suppose that he gives the inn-keeper who "lives by him" (tam upanissâyo eko varunivâṇijo jîvati, I. 252) sufficient means with which to carry on his trade in spirituous liquors. Even the tailor who lives with a seṭṭhi (seṭṭhim nissâya vasantassa tunnakârassa, IV. 38) may have stood in a similar relation to the master of the house.
