¹ For the supposition of a local union of different branches of trade the Jâtakas give no ground. A passage in the Mṛcchakatika of Sûdraka allows the conclusion that the Seṭṭhis lived in a special part of the town by themselves; as in the second act the Vasantasenâ asks her escort Madanikâ whether she knows the name of her (Vasantasenâ's) beloved one, Madanikâ replies evasively, in a joking spirit, "He lives in the quarters of the big tradesmen" (seṭṭhicattare paḍivasadi).
