¹ The opposite view is taken by Dahlmann in his book on the Mahâbhârata. According to him, there is "an extraordinary agreement between the culture-period represented in the Jâtakas and the Pali canon and that of the Mahâbhârata"; "the blossoming of economical life," as described here, is, in his opinion, "in full agreement with the picture of culture in Manu."
