The Caṇḍâlas of our text live outside the town (bahinagare, IV. 376) in a village (caṇḍâ-lagâmaka, IV. 200, 390) by themselves.¹ Two Caṇḍâla brothers who know how to blow a Caṇḍâla flute must show their art outside the city gate; the one plays at the northern, the other at the eastern gate.
