It is interesting that something of the original openness of the contest is still discernible in the description of this brahmodya: "Some say, 'Agni is the gṛhapati,' . . . some say, 'Vāyu is the gṛhapati,' . . . some say, 'The one that burns yonder (the sun) is the gṛhapati' " (*AB* 5. 25. 22).
