⁹ Since the *Manu* passage is preceded by a reference to the non-kṣatriya king, it might be thought that the following condemnation of the king equally refers to the non-kṣatriya king. Thus, for instance, Robert Lingat, *Les Sources du droit traditionel de l’Inde*, (Paris, 1967), 234. However, in other passages, it is the king in general who is condemned. Moreover, his
