‡ For ‘wrath obtains wrath’ as its reward. This is the proverbial *ātatāyin* doctrine kept in the law-codes, of which different forms exist: xii. 15. 55; 34. 19; 56. 30; iii. 29. 27; M. viii. 351; Āp. 1. 10. 29. 7, quoted from a Purāṇa; Vās. iii. 17; B. i. 18. 13. It refers to a secret assassin or an open foe. Curious is *manyus tam manyum ṛcchati* = ἔρις δ’ ἔριν ἀντιφυτεύει, Pseudo-Phocyl. 78.
