¹ Speculation on this point was common, as in Greece; so Hesiod says sex is determined by the day of procreation. Compare Bṛh. Saṃ. 78. 23-4. As well known, the law of Manu makes sex-differentiation depend on the respective vigor of the parents (M. iii. 49).
