Mahāvīra was thirty years old when with the permission of his elder brother Nandivardhana and other relatives, he renounced the world and with a divine garment (devadussa) left Kundaggāma in the dark of mārga-śīrṣa on the tenth day in winter. Followed by thousands of people, Mahāvīra reached the garden of Nāyasaṇḍavana, which lay in the outskirts of Kundaggāma, to the north-east direction where the renunciation ceremony was performed with great pomp.
