Puriya was a centre of the Jains. It was known for the image of the living lord⁶⁵⁴ and was inhabited by many śrāvakas. Puriya was visited by Vairasāmī, who is said to have arrived here from Uttarāpaha and proceeded to Māhesarī. At this time the city was governed by a Buddhist king and Jains and Buddhists were not on good terms⁶⁵⁵ Purima (Puriya) was a centre of trade and is cited as an example of jalapattana, where goods were carried by water.⁶⁵⁶ It may be identified with Purī Jagannath in Orissa.⁶⁵⁷
