Vārāṇasī was the birthplace of the seventh and the twenty third *Tīrthaṅkaras*.⁹²⁷ Vārāṇasī was visited by Mahāvīra, who is said to have arrived here from Kosambī and proceeded to Rāyagiha⁹²⁸ It was also frequented by Gosāla⁹²⁹ The Vānapattha mendicants are stated to have put up here on the bank of the Ganges⁹³⁰
