The older name of Aṭṭhiyaggāma was Vaddhamāna, where a temple was built upon an enormous heap of bones (*aṭṭhi*) of the people and hence it came to be known as Aṭṭhiyaggāma. Mahāvīra is said to have journeyed to this place from Morāga Sannivesa. The river Veyavatī flowed near this village. Mahāvīra is said to have passed first rainy season at this place.⁶⁹
