§ 190. The Mallas, neighbours of the Lichchhavis, are styled Vāsiśhṭhas in the Mahāparinibbāna Sutta,¹ and Vasiśhṭha is a well-known Aryan *gotra* name. The Mahāparinibbāna Sutta is not the work of crafty Brahmins of the type reputed to concoct Aryan geneologies for barbarian rulers.
