§212. The Ratnins are a development of the Vedic 'bestowers of the (*palāśa*) *maṇi*'. The latter were the 'king-makers' (राजकृतः=the ministers), the Sūta, the head of the village community, the builders of chariots and the skilful in metals, 'surrounded by the folk.'
