§ 228. These sentences are taken from mantra 22, Chapter IX of the Saṃhitā. The original mantra begins with salutations to the "Mother Land" [नमो मात्रे॑ पृथि॒व्यै नमो॑ मा॒त्रे पृथि॒व्या ...]¹ and she is pointed out to the King-elect as the State or Sovereignty. The modern editions of the *Śatapatha* give the words **साधवे त्वा** after **पोपाय त्वा** with an intervening **इति**. The Saṃhitā shows that these words are not part of the sacred text. They must have been used by the author of the *Śatapatha* as explanatory.
