¹ राजा ह्यशोको बलवान् प्रचण्ड आज्ञापयत् तक्षशिलाजने हि। उद्धार्यतां लोचनमस्य शत्रोर्मौर्य्यस्य वंशस्य कलङ्क एषः ॥ —*Divyāvadāna*, p. 410. The use of the word *Jana* should be noticed here and should be compared with **जानपदं जन** in Aśoka's inscription and **पौरजानपदो जनः** in the Rāmāyaṇa. The sense is of a collective body.
