§ 358. On the other hand the most pronounced feature of the Hindu monarchy, as we have seen, was the paramount position of law in the polity. We have also noticed the prominent reference to law in the coronation oath of the Mahābhārata. The civil character of the Hindu monarchy is reflected in the stress laid on law.
