In 600-450 B.C. people began, as it were, to question "Why should the old dynasties be allowed to live on ?" And the two first cases of usurpation were enacted—in Avantī and in Magadha A political thinker actually formulated a theory of usurpation against degenerate houses.⁵ The old dynasties seem to have outlived themselves and ceased to perform their function.
