Until the legal summons (Nār. I, 1, 47) has been issued or even before filing a suit (Vīram.), the plaintiff may place the accused under arrest by preventing him from leaving his house or undertaking a journey or a religious ceremony by means of an appeal to the king for that purpose (Mit.); the transgression of such a prohibition entails legal punishments excepting under special circumstances, e. g. when somebody is arrested in a dangerous or miserable condition, and moreover anybody who is just about to marry or to offer a sacrifice or to give alms, a cowherd who tends his cattle, a warrior in battle and other persons engaged in pressing business, cannot be arrested (Nār. I, 1, 48—54 etc.).
