Along with the four castes of Brahmans, Kṣatriyas, Vaiśyas and Śūdras the Brahmanical law ordains the four stages of life (*āśrama*): students, house-holders, forest-hermits and mendicants. After he has been taken into school with the initiation ceremony (*upa-nayana*, § 55), the Brahman student shall dwell with his teacher (*guru*) and study the Veda under his guidance.³
