The 19. century too has produced many important works. As a specimen of same and at the same time of the activity in French India in this sphere, I mention here Sicé's French translation of a Tamil sketch of the Smṛticandrikā² composed in the thirties by a Tamil,—Professor of Tamil in Madras. An interesting category is made up of the numerous Vyavasthās “legal judgments” of the court Pandits or Śāstris consulted at the Anglo-Indian law-courts, a few specimens of which I have in my possession.
