It is no less decidedly proved by the data in the census of 1891 that the prohibition of widow marriage goes hand in hand with the spread of of child marriage (§ 17). Thus in N. W. Provinces among 10,000 females 817 are widows among the Hindus and 1054 among the Jainas ³ who are dead against widow marriage. The female population of the age of 20-24 consists of 16·59 and 17·62 p.c. of widows among the Hindus of north and west Bengal respectively. ⁴ In the district of Wardha in the Central Provinces of 10,000 women of all ages 1610 are widows ⁵.
