The expressions Kusīda and Kusīdin are found already in the TS and in the Nirukta and the designation of percentage by numerical adjectives, occurring in M. 8,142, was already known to Pāṇini 5,¹,47 and he also uses the expression Vṛddhi "interest" and on the other hand also speaks of articles lent for use (*yācita, yācitaka*) which are free of interest (4,4,21). Accordingly, no importance evidently should be attached to the statement of Megasthenes fragment 27 B, where it is said that the Indians are unacquainted with the conception of interest (*oute daneizousi oute isasi daneizeshai*²). The Nasik inscriptions offer us ancient epigraphical documents for interests and the limit of the rate of interest from the first century A. D. downwards³.
