¹⁰⁹² Jaimini's sūtra is विधिर्वा धारणेऽपूर्वत्वात् III. 4. 15. This is not commented upon by Śabara; but the Tantravārtika, which notices this fact, assigns several reasons for this omission and explains it as follows: in the महापितृयज्ञ there is a passage अधस्तात्समिधं धारयन्ननुद्रवेदुपरि हि देवेभ्यो धारयति. In the *homa* for *pitṛs* the *samidh* is held below the *sruc* in which the *havis* has been placed; in this passage it is said that when the oblation is to be offered to the gods the samidh is to be held over the sruc (in which the oblation is placed before being thrown into the fire). Here though the particle 'hi' (showing reason) is employed and though the present 'dhārayati' is used (and not the potential as is usual in *vidhis*), it is not a mere arthavāda but a *vidhi*. So also in the Śat. Br. there is a *vidhi* about '*mātula-sutāpariṇayana*.'
