It would be of interest to many to learn that among one sect (the Tengalai) of the Śrī-vaiṣṇavas (followers of Rāmānuja) tonsure of widows has been forbidden for centuries, though that sect is most orthodox in other matters.¹³⁸⁸ The Śūdrakamalākara remarks that widows in Gauḍa keep their hair.¹³⁸⁹
