Various explanations are given why this rite was called Śūlagava. Nārāyaṇa¹⁹⁶⁵ says Śūla here means one who has a spit (or pointed rod) i. e. Śiva who is called Śūlin and that this sacrifice is offered to Rudra Śūlin with the ox as a sacrificial animal. Haradatta explains that here the ox is marked with the rod (of Śiva).
