The Devapratiṣṭhātattva (p. 505) quotes the Hayaśīrṣapañ-carātra to the effect that generally a brāhmaṇa should officiate at the consecration of an image of Viṣṇu, but a kṣatriya can officiate for a vaiśya or a śūdra yajamāna and a vaiśya may do for a śūdra yajamāna, but a śūdra cannot officiate.
