²³⁵⁷ Vide notes 1139-1140 about reciting the names of the pravara sages. For example, if the gotra of the sacrificer is Śāṇḍilya the hotṛ repeats Śāṇḍila, Asita, Devala; if it be Vatsa, he repeats Bhārgava, Cyāvana, Āpnavāna, Aurva, Jāmadagnya. Agni is here invoked to help the sacrificer as the summoner of the gods on this occasion, as he did help the illustrious ancestors of the sacrificer. Vide Haug’s tr. of Ait. Br. pp. 479-480 (note) and S. B. E. vol. 12 p. 115 (note) for *pravara*. It should be remembered that this pravara repetition is part of the *nigada*. He takes breath at the end of the pravara words. Then follow the words देवेद्धो ... तूर्णिर्हव्यवाह् (Āśv. I. 3. 6). Here he again takes breath. Then come fourteen words आस्यात्र ... परिधूरसि. Then the words आवह देवान् ... यज form the आवाहननिगद.
