After the *sāyaṁdoha* (evening milking) the adhvaryu directs (āgnīdhra or some other priest or himself) 'strew kuśa grass round the fires, first round āhavanīya, then gārhapatya, then dakṣiṇāgni' or the order may be first gārhapatya, then dakṣiṇāgni and lastly āhavanīya. The darbhas strewn on the south and north have tips turned to the east. The sacrificer mutters a mantra when kuśas are being strewn.
