A householder who had not consecrated the three vedic fires also had to perform the piṇḍa-pitṛ-yajña on amāvāsyā, but he offered it in the gṛhya fire. Vide Āśv. Śr. II. 7. 18, Saṁ. K. p. 838 ff, Saṁ. Pr. 908 ff. Gaut. V. 5 prescribes that a house-holder should at least daily offer water to the pitṛs and do more (i. e. offering food &c.) according to his ability and inclination. Manu II. 176 prescribes daily pitṛ-tarpaṇa (satiating the pitṛs with water), for which see pp. 668-69.
