²⁶¹⁶ The Ṛg. verses of the Rathantara sāman are (VII. 32.22-23); अभिश त्वा॑ शूर नोनुमोऽदु॑ग्धा इव धे॒नव॑: । ईशा॑नमस्य॒ जग॑तः स्व॒र्दृश॒मीशा॑नमिन्द्र॒ तस्थुष॑: ॥ न त्वावाँ॑ अन्यो दि॒व्यो न पार्थि॑वो॒ न जा॒तो न ज॑निष्यते । अश्वा॑यन्तो' मघवन्निन्द्र वा॒जिनो॑' ग॒व्यन्त॑स्त्वा हवामहे ॥. These two are respectively in the Bṛhatī and Paṅkti metres and together constitute a Bārhata Pragātha. Vide Jai. IX. 2. 25-28 and Śabara thereon. In chanting these to the Rathantara melody they are to be made into three, by repeating the 4th pāda of the first with the first half of the 2nd verse and the last of this with the latter half of Ṛg. VII. 32. 23. The Wai Ms. writes it as follows: हुम् । ओभित्वा शूर नोनुमो' वा । ऊँँ मादुग्धा इव धेनव ईशानमन्य जगतः सुवा २ ३ र्दृशाम् । ओ ईशानेमोँ २ ३ इन्द्रा ३ । सूंस्थू २ ३ ४ र्षा ओवाै ५ हौउवा ॥ अँस् ॥ ईशोवा । ओ' नामिन्द्रे सुस्थुषो' न त्वाँवा अन्यो' दिवियाः नै पा २ ३ र्थिवौ । नै जातो' नौ २ ३ जाँ ३ । नौ षिष्या २ ३ ४ ताउ वाै ६ हाउँवा । अँस् ॥ नै जोवौ । ऊँ तो न जैनिष्ठते' अश्वायन्तो' मघवन्निन्द्रे वा २ ३ जिनौः । गैव्यन्तैस्त्वा २ ३ हा ३ । वाँमा २ ३ ४ हो ओ' वाै ६ हौ उवा । अँस ॥ The Wai Ms inserts after जगतः, दिवियाः, मघवन्नि certain स्तोभs in which the letter भ occurs several times e.g. ओं वाग्भाभु भौभि भभे' भ भ भी' भो भ भ भ भ भ भः । (after जगतः). This is probably in accordance with लाट्यायनश्रौत VII. 11. 6-8. ताण्ड्य. VII. 6. 11 says that अस् is the निधन of रथन्तर ; vide ताण्ड्य VII. 7. 1 and 3 for प्रस्ताव and प्रतिहार of रथन्तर. The Ms. in the Bombay Asiatic Society's Library places the letter 'ra' wherever in the other two there is a vertical stroke and it has no figure over 'him' and 'om.' There are a few other differences also (not noted here). In the B. I. edition (vol. III. p. 85) the scheme is a good deal different as the following (only the first verse is taken) will show: आभित्वाँ२र शूर१र २र नोनुमा:१र २ १ । अदुग्धा१ आयि१र । वाै ३ धायिनौ ३ वाः ईशान-२इ रमस्य जगतः सुवर्हृ । शाँ २ ३ ४ मै२र ही । ईशाना२र २र २ ३ ४ मी५ । द्रैसू ३ औउवा २ ३ । ऐ ३ । स्युवैऔ ॥
