¹⁶⁵ The measures of capacity such as आढक, प्रस्थ occur in the Mathura Ins. of Huviṣka (E. I. XXI. p. 55 at p. 61). According to Parāśara (VI. 70) two *prasthas* are equal to an āḍhaka and 32 prasthas are equal to a droṇa. The Mit. on Yāj. III. 275 quotes a verse to this effect: 8 muṣṭis = one *kiñcit* or *kuñci* (acc. to some), 8 kiñcit = puṣkala, 4 puṣkalas = āḍhaka; 4 āḍhakas = droṇa and 16 droṇas = khārī. Aparārka (pp. 305 and 846) quotes two verses (which the Par. M. II 1. p. 141 ascribes to the Bhaviṣyapurāṇa) which say : 2 palas = prasṛti, 2 prasṛtis = kuḍava, 4 kuḍavas = prastha, 4 prasthas = āḍhaka, 4 āḍhakas = droṇa, 2 droṇas = kumbha. The Daṇḍaviveka p. 135 refers to this, adds that some held the kumbha to be equal to 20 droṇas (Kauṭ. II. 20 holds kumbha to be equal to 20 droṇas) and quotes the following verse from चण्डेश्वर ‘कुडवाद्या वेद्गुणाः प्रस्थाद्रोणमानकाः खार्यः। कुम्भो विंशतिखार्या दृष्टो लोके यथाक्रमशः'॥ The word droṇa occurs even in the Ṛgveda in the sense of a wooden trough used for holding water or soma juice. Vide Ṛg. VI. 2.8, VI. 37.2, VI. 44.20, IX. 28.4 etc. In Ṛg. IV. 32. 17 the sage prays Indra to grant a hundred khārīs of soma. The words *āḍhaka* and *droṇa* occur in the ardharcādi group (Pāṇ. II. 4. 31), *Khārī* in Pāṇ. V 1. 33 and V. 4. 101. The Par. M. II. 1. 141 says on this difference about kumbha 'देशभेदेन शास्त्रद्वयस्य व्यवस्थापनीयत्वात् ' Kauṭ. (II. 19 p. 104) himself tells us that the measure droṇa was of four varieties, 162½ palas, 175, 187½ or 200 palas according as it was used for measurement in the harem, or for servants or for ordinary dealings or for royal income.
