in Magadha it was only equal to two gavyūtis (last verse of deśadhyāya in bhūmikhaṇḍa). Kaut. gives hastas of various lengths for various purposes. Compare Manu VIII. 132-134, Viṣṇudharmasūtra IV. 1-7, Yāj. I. 362-363, Nārada pariśiṣṭa 57-60, Bṛhatsaṁhitā, 57. 1 ff, Vāyupurāṇa 101. 118 for some of these, which differ in some details from Kauṭilya's statements. Kaut. (II. 20) states the duration of a *nādikā* to be the time required for the passage of one āḍhaka of water from a pot through an aperture of the same diameter as a wire of 4 aṅgulas in length and made out of four suvarṇamāṣakas. 2 nāḍikās are equal to a muhūrta and 15 muhūrtas are equal to a day or a night. In II. 19 he gives measures of corn as follows:-- 4 kuḍumbas = prastha, 4 prasthas = āḍhaka, 4 āḍhakas = droṇa, 16 droṇas = khārī, 20 droṇas = kumbha. The droṇa differed for various purposes. Vide above (p. 134 note 165) for a quotation from Mit. on Yāj. III. 274. Hemādri, vratakhaṇḍa pp. 51-57, gives quotations from various sources for measures of time, corn &c. These measures were different in different countries and at different times. The Līlāvatī (of 12th century A.D.) I. 7 speaks of the khārī in Magadha being equal to 16 droṇas. Vide n. 165 above and H. of Dh. vol. II. p. 881 n. 2053 and L. D. Barnett's 'Antiquities of India' (pp. 206-210) for tables of weights and measures.
