¹²²⁸ The औरस is called स्वयंजात in आदिपर्व 120. 33. I understand प्रणीत, परिक्रीत and स्वैरिणीपुत्र in the आदिपर्व to be the same as पुत्रिकापुत्र, क्षेत्रज and गूढज respectively. I take ज्ञातिरेताः as an adjective of सहोढ and हीनयोनिधृतः as शौद्र. It has to be noted that the अनुशासनपर्व (49. 3-11) mentions 20 sons in all and employs a peculiar terminology in several cases, viz. औरस (also called अनन्तरज), निरुक्तज (for क्षेत्रज), प्रसूतज (meaning अनियोगोत्पन्न), पतितात्स्त्रभार्यायां जात, and speaks of दत्त, क्रीत, अध्यूढ (= सहोढ), 6 अपध्वंसजs (i. e. The Anuśāsana (49. 11) expressly states that it is not possible to deny altogether the status of sonship to these sons It then says (49. 20-21) that when a boy is abandoned by his parents and he is brought up by another and his natural parents are not known, he belongs to the caste of the man who brings him up and that even for कानीन and अध्यूढ (सहोढ) sons saṁskāras are to be performed as if they were one's sons (49. 25-26).
