Even in the Vedāṅga Jyotiṣa¹⁷⁴² (of Ṛg.) the word *yuga* is used in the sense of a period of five years (pañcasaṁvatsaramayaṁ yugādhyakṣaṁ prajāpatim). The ancient Pitāmahasiddhānta which is not now extant, stated, according to the Pañcasiddhāntikā of Varāhamihira (XII. 1), that *yuga* means five years of the Sun and the Moon (raviśaśinoḥ pañca yugaṁ varṣāṇi Pitāmahopadiṣṭāni). This sense of the word is still found in the Sabhāparva 11. 38.
